Hafod Church

Welcome to our beautiful Church

The project has helped to upgrade our facilities including sustainable travel hub at the nearby village hall Ysgoldy Goch and the renovation of Tŷ Elor which was used as a resting place for our churchyard inhabitants’ coffins before their funerals and is now a very useful storage area.

ln 1803, the owner of the Hafod Estate Thomas Johnes commissioned architect James Wyatt to design a new church. Wyatt was renowned as the restorer of Salisbury Cathedral and some imposing Gothic country houses.

The church is dedicated to St. Michael and All Angels and offers a wealth of history. Bi-lingual worship services are held on the 2nd Sunday of each month at 10.30 am.

Eglwys Newydd Hafod Church, is situated in a quiet and picturesque area, on the boundary of the Hafod Estate and is open to the public every day between 10.30 am and 4.30 pm from Easter to the end of September. It is the venue for weddings and concerts too.

The burial vault of Thomas Johnes and his family of Hafod Esate is here as well as the font decorated with the Johnes family Coat of Arms. The christening font survived the devastating fire at the church in April, 1932, and is sculptured with the Johnes Family Coat of Arms and figures representing the Cardinal Virtues.

The first church at Hafod was built in 1620 by Morgan Herbert, one of the early Squires of the Hafod Estate. Thomas Johnes inherited the Hafod Estate in the late 18th century.

The outer appearance of the church has not changed but the roof and the internal Gothic furniture, fittings and paintings were lost or badly damaged by the fire in the church. The font survived amidst the charred fallen roof timbers, but tragically the beautiful marble memorial, sculpted by Sir Francis Chantrey in memory of Mariamne, the only child of Thomas Johnes, was damaged beyond repair.

The restoration was overseen by W.D. Caroe who designed the attractive limed-oak roof, furnishings and fittings. Take time to explore our beautiful Church which benefits from its social history being researched by Edgar Morgan and members of the church. Visitors can discover their family history through a touch screen computer kiosk which gives access to church yard gravestones details.
